The young lad sat full of lament at the foot of his learned teacher. His voice was sorrowful, his eyes dull, lacking spark. Life for him seemed like a heavy burden. Everyone around him was happy, he was the only unlucky one. Days passed from one to the next but good times eluded him.
The learned teacher listened without offering any comment, a calm smile upon his face.
As the one-sided conversation continued, clouds gathered in the sky, a cool breeze began to blow and soon tiny diamond droplets of rain began descending. The smell of wet earth engulfed the atmosphere and unknowingly interrupted the long litany of complaints.
As water gathered and started to flow in little streams, the young lad got up to watch the flow. When the rain ceased, the grass looked greener, the trees freshly washed. The sky threw up a rainbow of happiness. The birds came out of hiding to bathe in tiny puddles, ruffling their feathers, singing a song of joy in chorus.
A smile conquered the sadness of the young man, transforming his face, softening his expression, bringing a sparkle to his eye. Instantly he realized that he was happy. He turned to his Guru who had been watching. The Learned One finally spoke, “My child,” he said, “happiness is not connected to the fulfillment of desires. Do not tie it up with success which comes but rarely in life.”
“Happiness is surrendering your soul to the present moment and experiencing the joy that brings with it. The present time is the most powerful time of your life. If you spend it in lamentation of the past or in the fruitless worry of the uncertain future, you will lose it forever.”
“Love shines through every precious moment of life. Embrace that love every moment. Live in the moment, you will be the master of your own happiness and love life forever !”
The young man’s eyes filled with tears of eternal gratitude and he bent down to touch the feet of his revered teacher.
