Why did you let me die?: A poem by Amrita Lahiri Bhattacharya

I cried..
For the first time when they touched my teeny-weeny body and deposited me on your bosom..

I rejoiced..
When for the first time, you clutched me close and I latched on to taste the elixir..

I was shocked..
When the male dominated society snatched me from your soft caressing hands..

I was hopeful..
That you will revolt against the patriarchal society and bring me back in your lap..

I was crying again
When the monsters killed me and left me there..

Have some mercy humans!
We, the girl child also deserve to live!
What was my mistake?
What were the rules that I had broken?
When will I rejoice again at my birth?
