When I am home from the border: A poem by Supriya Bansal

Hiding in the trenches, sweat glistening on my face
The sounds of blazing guns surround me,
Each shot brings back you, things I was yet to do

Promise me, on my return from the border
You’d hold me tight, put my head in your lap O’ mother
Want to lie there secure, for a few minutes more, just a few minutes more

 Promise me this time
you won’t whine moan ‘n wail when I tease you, sweet sister
Want to hear that cheery boisterous laughter for a few minutes more, just a few minutes more

Promise me, will you
shout and scold, be antsy ‘n annoyed dear father
Want to wallow in your worry for me, for a few minutes more, just a few minutes more

Promise me, when I am home
To tussle and tiff, rumble and riff, little brother
Want to hang on to you for a few minutes more, just a few minutes more

I think it’s time, I can hear them coming for me
Soon I’d be one with the Earth, ashes in the sea

I am not afraid to die, nor dreading the pain
But can’t bear the thought of not seeing you again
