Mohali/ Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar: Modernity and Traditional Blend

Mohali seemed to be the favourite wedding destination this season, with four invites in a fortnight. Sprawling lawns, ostentatious façade, multi-cuisine lavish buffet and folk artists have turned it into a hotspot for big fat Punjabi weddings. The planned city offers modernity on one hand, yet retains the traditional, authentic Punjabi heritage.

A satellite of Tricity (Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchkula), with planned sectors, manicured green belts and landscaped roundabouts, it is establishing itself as a commercial centre and rapidly expanding IT sector. Accessibility enhances its importance: Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, IX C operates domestic and International flights; Railway Station serves as a hub for passengers and goods, and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Interstate Bus Terminus, India’s first air-conditioned bus stand, operates ordinary and AC buses. An excellent road network makes travelling by car an enjoyable experience.

Cricket culture thrives here. The Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium, home turf of Punjab Cricket and Punjab Kings (IPL Franchise), hosts Test Matches, ODIs and T20s. Talented cricketers like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Shubman Gill hail from the city, besides many like Arshdeep Singh, Amanjot Kaur have refined their talent here. The city also has the International Hockey Stadium, the home ground of the Punjab Warriors of Hockey India League.

Mohali is a major educational centre. Highly ranked schools like Yadavendra Public School, YPS, a premier day/boarding school, Bedford School (British International Girls School) and many more offer a comprehensive curriculum. The city offers diverse higher education opportunities: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, IISER; National Institute for Pharmaceutical Education and Research, NIPER; Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, C DAC; Chandigarh University, Amity University and so on.

Fast-paced development has attracted business enterprises, shopping malls and retail plazas. Apparel companies, fashion labels, haute couture and boutiques offer a budget-friendly to high-end shopping experience. A visit to shops selling Punjabi juttis, classic phulkari and typical wedding props is an enriching experience. Practically all fast food chains and QSRs are thriving in the customer-centric city. As the evening falls, swanky bikes and customised SUVs swarm the ‘gedi’ route and invigorating aromas waft from street carts at the 3B2 market. Bright lights, lip-smacking street food, bubbly crowd and full-on music create a vibrant atmosphere and is a lively experience.

The ancient Shiv Mandir and Gurudwara Amb Sahib are famous religious places of the city. History aficionados must visit the nearby Baba Banda Bahadur War Memorial and see Fateh Burj, the tallest victory tower. The neighbouring Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park or Chhat Bir Zoo is home to a large variety of birds and animals and is a must-visit for naturalistic enclosures, a walk-in aviary and safari.

Mohali offers lucrative opportunities across diverse territories.
