If We Ever Meet Again: A Poem by Vasudha Pansare

If we ever meet again,
Our eyes will be full of pain,
What will we say to each other?
We’ll stand quietly in the rain.
Will we walk together under the dripping trees?
Will we listen silently to the flowing breeze?
Will we hold hands and let our eyes speak?
Or will we just stand and let the moments freeze?
Will you remember the past and smile at me?
Will we remember the good times and feel free?
Will we be comfortable with each other?
Or will our joy be momentary?
I hope we don’t meet again and become sorrowful,
I hope we store our memories in cotton wool,
And only visit the precious past sometimes,
And perhaps forget the past, move on, be cheerful.
