Why Does It Lead to You? : A Poem by Amrita Mallik

I took the rugged path through the mountains,
I attempted walking on the azure undulating waters,
The birds laughed seeing my gait on the skies,
Yet, I couldn’t escape your abounding love.
‘Match made in heaven,’ they insisted,
Both of us laughed, staring at each other,
A gimmick, a prop ever ready to be used,
For we must act according to society.
I had to return, no matter which way I chose,
Stealthily or openly, I went to square one,
Isn’t there any road made just for me,
Where I can go without the hauntings?
A scarred and shattered me, always scared,
Found no escape route, from the embellished cage,
As abuses were hurled every now and then,
As death winked at me mercilessly.
And, now I wonder, how love could be a trap,
A claustrophobic and suffocating me,
Couldn’t convince anyone of separation,
Worse than the hardest convict, I live.
