The Ramadan Moon: A Poem by  Ambika Gibikote Tadipatri

**
Rejoice in the hilal, the new crescent moon of Ramadan,
As in this ninth month of our calendar it spawns,
To us in our spiritual journey as pilgrim travellers,
The appearance of this hilal acts as a holy ambassador.
**
This undeniable connection between the time and the moon’s phases,
In Islamic Lunar calendar, the twelve months’ demarcation appraises,
In this holiest of months the Ramadan hilal moon’s sighting,
Like an old, curved palm stalk, is verily inviting.
**
It invites us into the month of Quran’s revelation’s fasting:
Fasting to strengthen the seeker’s spiritual reflection,
While undertaking one’s own purification and detoxification,
And practising attaining self-control and discipline’s perfection.
**
We pray that the new moon shines on us instilling goodness,
We implore this hilal brings in belief, safety and fullness,
We beseech that the Ramadan moon guides us to empathy,
We plead it makes us strengthen others with charity.
**
Oh Ramadan Moon, so grateful am I for this opportunity,
To bring in with Allah and myself evolved unity,
And even after the hilal of Shawwal on Eid al-Fitr,
My practices powered by Ramadan moon; I resolve to further.
