Now I Walk Alone: A Poem by Poonam Kakodkar

I make a conscious effort
To hold my head upright
When I walk in a straight
Yet elegant line
Born into a family of
Amazing parents and
A beautiful elder sister
That made me so proud
I’m now alone left to grapple
With the vagaries of life
On my own, all alone
Yet I know I can do it all
Memories of sorrows and laughter
Of battles lost and won
Reverberate in my mind
Like the ripples in a placid lake
I was bestowed a rich legacy
Of benevolence and grace
That I’m eternally grateful for and
It keeps me grounded and strong
Now I walk alone
Leaving behind the shadows of the past
Towards the promise of a future
To create a legacy of my own.
