In His Footsteps:A Journey With My Father: A Poem by Jayashree Bhattacherjee

Down the way where the gay wildflowers did sway
Father and daughter,  we walked side by side each day
Our Footsteps merged in a rhythm so fine
A bond of love that will forever entwine
His strong hand held mine, he was my compass, my guiding star
Reassuringly he squeezed mine tight when I declined and said, ” Never fear, Daddy’s here”
Then came a day to let go, no more hands did we share
I walked on my own, yet on his footsteps I did tread with gentle care
Where reliability is a virtue, close to perfect in paternal incarnation
His guidance I followed with sincere dedication
His proportioned pampering, scolding, teaching and playing
A balanced blend of love austere, paved my being
His mantras echo in my daily stride
“Go for a walk and let your worries subside”
Though I miss him,  his legacy remains
A source of strength that abates my life’s pain
Now I lace up my boots in the morning hush
Hold my head high, his jacket wraps me with memories that rush
I walk alone, yet I have my compass, every step I walk in his footstep dear
A rich, resonant voice resonates, ” Never fear, Daddy is here.”
