Friends Make Life More Beautiful: A Poem by Rajshree Rathore

I never acknowledged this character –‘Friendship’, until….
The arrival of the gang of girls,
Sojourns of lunches, of secrets, of laughers,
Those unpunctuated conversations pulling my soliloquy,
A contagious remedy named ‘friends’- gladly acknowledged!

Pitch dark night, 2 AM, phone ringing,
A preposterous story of a new love,
Of a half-eaten chocolate, of an insane teddy gifted,
At the other end of the phone- a candid, patient listener,
An assurance given; a concern flagged- a dedicated 2 AM friend!

Life at times a loaded metaphor,
Searching for an anchor,
‘Friend’ a rescuer with no life jacket,
With no terms or conditions attached,
Yet the most solid life contract – undefined, unpayable!

In their (friends) most hysterical conversations- I find a pause,
In their laughter- some chaotic breaks,
In their innocence – my new self,
Having them around is like meditation,
A beautiful connect – I am still deciphering!
