A Journey That Never Ended: A Story by Sheela S. Iyer

Sakshi is a Bharatnatyam dancer and an actor. She always ensured she put her heart and soul into every performance. This made her stand out from the crowd. She started working as an actor even before she completed her graduation.  During her college days, she fell in love with a boy with whom she later got engaged. One day she got a call from a reputed dance institution who invited her to perform. This was in a different city, but the opportunity was big. She immediately accepted their invitation, and a week later, she travelled.  On the day of the event, she felt nervous when she glanced at the auditorium. The hall was packed. She quickly brushed away all the nervousness and climbed onto the stage and performed.  The auditorium echoed with applause. Gratitude flowed through her.

The next day she started early and got into her car to go back home.  The sky was covered with clouds and looked gloomy.  They had just covered a few kilometers when suddenly, rain lashed against the windshield of the red car, making it difficult for the driver to move ahead.  The driver slowed down and tried to apply brakes, but the wheels slipped on the wet slippery pavement and hit a pole. The localities immediately moved them to a nearby hospital.

The driver was brought dead.  Sakshi survived but suffered many injuries.  The hospital authorities dialed the last number that was displayed on her phone. It was her mom’s number. The news twisted her heart, and tears brimmed up. She and her husband immediately left for the hospital.

On reaching the hospital, they found that their daughter’s right leg was completely damaged and had to be dismembered.  This news shattered them. They wondered, how would, they tell this to Sakshi.

Sakshi got operated on. On gaining consciousness, she found her right leg had been amputated. She screamed and cried uncontrollably.  Only when the doctor gave her a sedative, did she calm down.

After a couple of weeks, she was discharged. Her fiancée refused to marry her. Sakshi didn’t feel bad as she was expecting this. She and her family had come to terms with the accident and its consequences. Yet this was not a plea for sympathy. Her parents supported her in all possible ways. She fought each day to regain control of her life and eventually did. She didn’t want to use a wheelchair, so the doctor suggested she go for a prosthetic leg and she immediately agreed.

Soon she stood on her legs.  She even started dancing and teaching young children.  She continued acting in dramas and movies and still does. Her journey that she thought had ended, did not end, and she moved in life gracefully. This was possible only because her cup was brimmed with passion and hope.
