Water: A poem by Jayashree Bhattacherjee

Sweating, impetus, electric with elation and wild
I ran for a plunge into the water that smiled
I dived, fell, floated – what a sweet intoxication
So luring, full of thrill and sensation
In the water, I find my purer passion, lordlier leisure
In the water, I close my eyes for delight past measure
Here I find myself happier than on land
With my dreaming head and steering hand
The water grapples pulls me down and plays with me
I rise and pit against the cold, dark water of the sea
Swimming hand overhand against the wind
I feel the water’s vain pound that makes me grin
In the endless water while swimming
Life may come to an end by drowning
But life is an adventure, perilous and gay
And death, a long and vivid holiday
Water is embedded deeply in my fundamental and cultural way of strife
It pervades my life, it keeps me alive, without it I can’t survive
Happily when I hold my breath underwater, for not so long
I do realize that water carries its own song.
