Petrichor: A poem by Nisha Tandon

The Earth has been athirst to taste the elixir of life
It looks towards the azure skies as if pleading in desperation
Ominous black clouds sprawl across the skies leisurely
And the first drops of rainfall, bringing in exhilaration

The maiden rain shower, brief and sudden
Leaves the Earth longing for just some more
The air smells heavenly with the earthy scents of rains
And we are yet to recover from the intoxicating petrichor

The fragrance left behind entices and evokes passions
As raindrops come cascading merrily towards the parched earth
The patter of the pristine drops quenches the thirst of the soils
As it gratefully rejoices yet another rebirth

Sporadic drops carry shattered hopes and promises
And heal the droughty soils as they have long yearned
The drooping flowers spring back to vibrant life
As the grass turns crisp through the Earth sunburned

I cajole my emotions to simmer down
And luxuriate in nature’s generosity, the virgin downpour
I allow my soul to satiate and quench its defiant thirst
And bask in the first thrill of indelible petrichor
