My child and I: A poem by Dr. Guncha Gupta

Exhausted after a labor prolonged,
My forehead crowned with beads of perspiration n’ a frown,
I looked down at my bundle cloaked in a cottony pink gown.
A chord struck n’ glittery tears rolled down.
Moved, my head bowed, I drowned
In emotions unnamed, untouched.

Wriggling, a teeny foot peeped out, pink, delicate to touch,
My heart flushed with passion n’ face red with blood rush, I blushed
Tentatively, I unfurled my bundle n’ stardust trickled out.

I trembled, I cuddled, unsure, my heart fluttered, as blue lips puckered,
A little cry, as though calling out – mother!
Her puny nose flared, we sensed our scents.
A world new I discovered as our scents mingled n’ became one.

Her black pearly eyes opened to a slit
I gazed awestruck, she calmly expressive, ebbed my misgivings.
Instinctively held close to my bosom, I cooed her a tune,
Bowing in gratitude for this motherly boon.

Many a tale I’d heard of love, sacrifice n’ pamper.
Yet, wave after wondrous wave of sensation swathed me.
Nuzzling, I vowed to row my angel to the shore,
Secure in the knowledge, my womb was the blessed planter
For the seed where my heart centered.
A love so wide, to think I trembled.
A bond so mystical, to think I trembled.
