Guilt or Sin

1

Reema yearned for a break from the monotony of her regular life. She wanted to enjoy some free time away from her family’s restrictions, from the everyday hustle and bustle of life. At the start of this year, she got that opportunity.

Her company was sending some employees to a training session for a month. Reema got selected for this training and was asked to give her passport for the Visa and other documents. Reema was happy and eagerly awaiting the trip. Two days before her flight, her husband, Shri fell ill. She was disappointed that she had to forgo her trip now. But Shri told Reema, “To go without any guilt, it’s just a fever that will take time.”

With a heavy heart, she boarded her flight. On reaching Malaysia, she forgot about guilt and began enjoying her trip. In the morning, they were all busy with their training. But in the evening, they planned a city tour and enjoyed having dinner at various places. Reema got close to Piyush, one of her colleagues, on this trip. They both enjoyed each other’s company and spent most of their time together.

One evening, Reema and Piyush decided to order dinner in Piyush’s room and spend some quiet time together. After dinner, they were enjoying wine and listening to music when Piyush touched Reema’s face, lowered his mouth and kissed Reema on her lips. Reema did not resist and enjoyed his lips on hers. The rhythm of the evening changed, and in one weak moment, they crossed all limits.

The following day, Reema realised her mistake and felt guilty for the sin she had committed. Reema could not blame Piyush alone because she was an equal participant. Reema loved Shri and never thought of cheating or leaving him. Reema returned from her trip, but her one-night stand was eating her from the inside. Shri, too, felt a change in Reema. She was reticent and got startled whenever he touched her.

One night, Shri asked Reema, “What is the matter, sweetheart? You have changed since the time you returned from your trip. Please share with me. Do you feel bondage in our relationship? Do you want to leave me?”

Reema stared at Shri with wide eyes, “Shri, no, I love you and cannot live without you. But something is eating me from the inside, and maybe after knowing you do not want to stay with me anymore. Reema started sobbing and poured out the guilt she had stored in her heart. Reema narrated the whole incident about her one-night stand and asked for his forgiveness.” Shri took Reema in his arms and hugged her.

Then he kissed her tear-stained face and said, “Reema, I am happy you told me everything. It takes guts to acknowledge your mistake. We are not perfect and sometimes commit errors. But the real thing is to learn from those oversights and not repeat them. I knew about your mistake beforehand. I was waiting for you to confess it. That evening you had accidentally dialled my number, and I heard everything.”

“Reema, I was waiting on hot coals this entire time. I thought you wanted to leave me. I forgive you for your first and last mistake, sweetheart, because I love you. I am happy that you trusted me. I free you from your guilt and let us close that dark chapter here and now,” said Shri.

“Shri, I am fortunate to get a life partner like you. I am deeply sorry,” replied Reema, hugging him.
