The Caged Bird

0

You give it a golden cage, but it still remains a cage

Ruthlessly snatching away its freedom

How chirpy and boisterous it was in its erstwhile glory!

When its wings would spread out in sheer majesty to fly up to the horizon,

to skim and glide across the stream of river,

to teach its little ones valuable lessons of life,

to live and chat with its companions,

to feel the blessed shade of trees and to build its house on branches, however tedious the process might have been

You keep its cage inside the four walls of your house

So that your little ones can fiddle with its wings,

So that it rejuvenates you and cheers you up with its mellifluous voice,

So that its colourful feathers adorn the corner table of your drawing room

But remember, it curses you and your being in its own dialect

For you have afflicted it immensely with melancholy, inertia, or probably, even insanity

You may not comprehend it right now,

But I know why the caged bird sings!
