Red Rose: A Story by Neeti Parti

Through tear filled eyes, she looked at the gold-framed red rose lying on its velvety bed.

The journey of this exotic flower was now interwoven with the legacy of their family.

This is how it happened……..

It was Valentine’s Day. She was pregnant at that time and was waiting out the final days. For relaxation, she had been sitting on the green carpet of grass in the nearby park following the fluttering endeavors of a blue-winged flitting butterfly when her attention was taken over by what seemed to be an unhappy exchange of words. She watched the whole scenario with interest.

A young girl was upset with her paramour who she felt was not living up to her expectation of a ‘deeply in love lover’!

The young man was on his knees holding out a red rose, trying to pacify the young girl whose body language conveyed only negativity and rejection.

Sure enough and soon enough, the girl snatched the rose from her lover’s hand, threw it on the ground and stormed off. The young man looked dejectedly at the flowery offering and left the park, his head bowed.

A beautiful flower lying unclaimed on the ground didn’t seem right to her. She walked up, picked it up and smelt it. The fragrance enveloped her being overpowering her senses. She carried it home.

As was her habit each evening, she went up to her ailing Grandma’s room to cheer her up. Grandma had been in a lot of pain for a long time and rarely smiled. As she bent to kiss her on her forehead, Grandma noticed the rose. Thinking it was for her, she held out her hand claiming it and smiled. She showered many a blessing on her and her unborn child.

A few days later, Grandma left with the angels in her sleep. She was holding the rose in her hand when they found her. Gently removing the flower, she put the rose in her favorite book as an eternal blessing from her grandma. The flower personified her grandmother’s qualities – beautiful and fragrant!

Not many days after, she was blessed with a wonder of Creation – an adorable daughter. Almost naturally, she named her Rose.

Today Rose was getting married. She would give the gold framed red rose resting on its velvet to her as a gift wishing her a life full of happiness.

Perhaps one day Rose would pass it on to her daughter…….
