Keeping Pace

I struggle to keep pace,

with the shadows of self-doubt

that spring up like mushrooms

every time I say, “Let me try”

I struggle to keep pace,

with the WHY’S that sprout

from the behaviour of others

who have silenced their values.

I struggle to keep pace,

with unlimited “you could’ve done better”

that tend to raise the bar

every time I dare to reach it.

Today, I finally decide,

to shun keeping pace,

move ahead, break shackles,

bid goodbye to the rat race.

Instead, honour my dreams,

that allow me to wake up starry-eyed,

do what I love, colour my canvas bright,

I’ve finally learned, to keep pace with the true ME.
