Candle: A poem by Munira Dalal

You see me in different sizes and shapes
Even in my dying stage, my form reshapes
Though broken at times I can still mend myself
Fragile in my look but undoubtedly in my work I excel

I come in different colors and fragrances too
Get blown after a birthday wish is made by you
Dinner by my light fills romance in the air
In my warm glow, feelings of love you can share

With tremendous reverence and faith, I am placed at an altar
My tiny flicker is the hope and solace, in prayers that you offer
I kindle hearts to march or take a vigil in unison
Truly solemn way to protest or express emotion

From times immemorial I am lighted to dispel darkness
Burning to give light to others hasn’t dimmed my brightness
Each one of us has the ability to illuminate and brighten another heart
Having done so you’ll feel joyous you’ve fulfilled your part

A tiny me compared to the mighty sun can also brighten a dark night
Never ready to be easily snuffed, I put up a great fight
Don’t get fooled by my tiny flicker and dying spark
I am a candle; though extinguished burning wicks yet leave a mark!
