Christmas waves its magic wand over the world, making everything softer and more beautiful. For us as children, Christmas holidays were the most awaited time of the year—a joyful break from routine filled with laughter, love, and celebration.
Before school closed, we immersed ourselves in festive activities. The school was adorned with balloons and Christmas trees, while the band played carols that we sang in unison. Plays and pantomimes added to the merriment, and the best part? Receiving thoughtful gifts from the nuns, who believed, “The joy of brightening other lives becomes the magic of Christmas.”
At home, the Christmas spirit blossomed further. Trees were lovingly decorated with ornaments, lights, and a shimmering star atop to signify the Star of Bethlehem. Living without snow, we sprayed artificial snow on the branches, creating our own winter wonderland.
Our house had an old-world charm with its crackling fireplace. We’d gather around it, sipping hot cocoa, munching savories, and playing board games, while the aroma of freshly baked cakes and cookies filled the air. The kitchen buzzed with life as Mom’s baking spree turned the house into a haven of cinnamon and spice.
Christmas Eve was magical. We’d hang our largest stockings and leave cookies and milk for Santa, imagining his arrival through the chimney with a sack full of surprises. Our excitement was boundless as we waited for morning to unveil the gifts under the tree and the goodies stuffed in our stockings.
Yet Christmas wasn’t just about receiving—it was about giving. Guided by the nuns’ teachings of sharing and caring, we imbibed the joy of helping others. Together with our parents, we prepared bags of food, clothes, and goodies for the less fortunate. These were taken to Prem Niwas, the home for the destitute and dying established by Mother Teresa.
The home, decorated with balloons and Christmas trees, radiated warmth. Its inhabitants, rescued from the streets, looked happy and cared for under the loving watch of the Missionaries of Charity. Even the nurseries, filled with cherubic babies, sparkled with festive cheer. Distributing gifts and witnessing their joy was an unparalleled experience. “The Yuletide spirit warms our hearts, reminding us that love, generosity, and togetherness are the true gifts of Christmas”.
One unforgettable Christmas, I had the honor of meeting Mother Teresa herself. She blessed me, urging me to carry on spreading kindness. Her words remain etched in my heart, a reminder that the magic of Christmas lies in the act of brightening others’ lives.
For us, Christmas holidays were about bonding—with family, friends, and the community. The laughter, love, and shared memories left an indelible mark on our hearts, reminding us that the spirit of Christmas is not just a season, but a way of life.
